Welcome to Sea Rose Scenic!
I have been around the arts since as far back as I can remember. I grew up outside of Worcester, MA surrounded by art. My grandfather was a professional sign painter back in the 30's and 40's when that meant climbing tall city buildings to paint their advertisements on the walls for the world to see. He was also a sculptor and an inventor and I remember his workshop as
a scene out of Harry Potter. My grandmother was also a gifted fine artist but back then wasn't given the recognition she deserved. Her oils were beautiful. Seeming to skip a
generation, my sisters and I seem to have inherited their love and gift of the Arts.
I attended the University of Maine majoring in Fine Art. I fell in love with pen and ink and 3D art back then. As the years passed and I moved to Cincinnati, Ohio I got involved with
a lot of community theater and really discovered myself. After several years designing and painting and dressing community shows and doing smaller free lance jobs in the area, I was able to secure a fabulous job as a scenic artisit at the regional theater of The Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park. This is a Tony Award winning theater that gave me access to many gifted and talented artisits that I was able to learn techniques and skills from and develop my own style. I was responsible for painting backdrops, scenic floors, sculpting and faux painting props and scenery, extensive use of styrofoam carving, built and painted puppets, and mixed paints and solvents for spraying . It was here that I honed my scenic painting skills and I stayed there for many years.
Given an opportunity to teach scenic art and technical theater arts to high school students, I accepted the challenge and went to work for the last 13 years doing that. I have with the help of two very talented friends, help develop a more comprehensive theater program for the Lakota School district at the high school level. I also still free lance doing everything from faux finishes on interior walls, large mural paintings on barn walls and other exterior and interior spaces, build large garden arbohs of Maine driftwood, and sculpt from styrofoam. Having spent so many years in theater backstage I also faux finish most anything, including tables, chairs or any item one might wish to have onstage or in their home.
In the last 20 years I have designed and scenic painted over 50 productions. My newest design will be this spring at Lakota West High School for the production of "Sweeney Todd". I recently painted a large mural for the "Lynn Historical Museum" in Lynn MA. and sculpted and painted a cave of rock large enough to walk through for the same museum. Through the Playhouse I assisted The Masonic Lodge restore backdrops, painted large mice for the Cincinnati Ballets production of "A Nutcracker",built a faux stone wall for the "Parks and Recreation" dept., and helped restore backgrounds for exhibits at the Cincinnati Zoo.
